If you're reading this then you've probably already decided to give it a go. If you're still trying to make up your mind then read on ...
Why do we do it? And yes, insanity is an often suggested motivation. However, there are many good reasons:
The important point here is that it's not only for the superfit and lycra-clad minority, there are real, normal people all over the country dragging themselves out of bed on a Sunday morning to complete a triathlon. Notice there that I said complete, not compete. Set your own goals and constantly aim to achieve the best you can. Who cares what anybody else is doing? At least to begin with, concentrate on what you're doing and how you're getting on - if you're lucky enough to be fast you can worry about competing with others once you've familiarised yourself with it all.
Triathlons are friendly affairs, with the seriously fast still finding time to encourage the slower amongst us as they zoom past for their next lap. Nobody minds if you're unsure or new, don't be shy, ask. They'll help, they'll answer your questions, they'll chat to you at the start and cheer you on as you near the finish. It is very much an inclusive community. I've done races where I really wasn't up to the standard of the other competitors and where they've been clearing away by the time I finished, still the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming.
So why do it? It's fun. You'll always be welcome. You'll be glad you did.
